In Britain in recent years the plight of asylum seekers and refugees has been brought close to home. Previously, circumstances like that were recorded in newspaper photos or TV news bulletins from places elsewhere in the world. Now, people who are fleeing from physical danger, political oppression and religious persecution are alongside us.
Many churches have shown Christian care and concern – often working ecumenically – by opening their premises, offering practical help and supporting individuals through the sometimes complex procedures and paperwork. Refugee Week highlights the issues facing asylum seekers and refugees and encourages the humanitarian help that is being offered. A Sunday service for Refugee Week brings these concerns into the worship life of the church.
