At the West London Mission we are blessed with having a number of preachers ‘on note’ ‘on trial’ or accredited who are under 30. However modern life presents its own challenges and it can be awkward getting to tutorials and local preachers’ meetings. We are scattered across London and getting to and from a tutorial can be a couple of hours’ travelling. With two of our current group being deaf or hard of hearing, we struggled through some of the earlier modules as group discussion presented its own challenges!

Up until the last 30 years or so, exclusive language had been commonplace. Humankind was referred to as mankind, ‘man’ was understood to include women and children as well as men and the language of liturgy commonly referred to ‘fellow men’ and ‘all men’ when its meaning was ‘everyone’. As preachers and worship leaders we have been directed by Conference to use inclusive language in worship, yet still we hear ‘man’ and ‘mankind’ coming from the pulpit. It is not ‘only a word’ but a whole way of thinking that needs to change.

Rev Andy Laird relates a valuable Probationer experience
Introduction The Methodist Church requires its Probationer Ministers to undertake some individual theological study during their probation period. For my second year’s study I spent a day each week in a local primary school, working with children and learning from the staff: firstly, how best to communicate simple and complex ideas; and, secondly, to study how children relate to Spirituality. My aims were to improve my ability to relate to young children and to learn how best to engage them within a worship environment; and, then, to share the benefit of my experience with other preachers.

RecentlyI attended a day conference entitled ‘Deaf & Hearing Together’which was hosted by the King’s Centre in Halifax. It was aboutchurches being inclusive, and focussing on the problems of deafpeople. There was a good mixture of deaf and hearing peoplethere, and they came from several different denominations. It wasled by one of the Deaf Chaplains for West Yorkshire dioceses. Alot of the discussion might be helpful to Local Preachers.

Ideas for working towards more inclusive worship by Judith Lincoln
In the autumn of 2006 Judith Lincoln took the subject of Learning Disability as the focus for “Unit 19” of her LP Studies. The project looked at what people with learning disabilities (and their families) find helpful or unhelpful in worship and church life. This article is the result of that research.
