Faith in an emerging culture by Dave Tomlinson ISBN 978-1-85311-857-9 £9.99 148 pages
There are many books which claim to offer ways of helping the church engage with contemporary culture. Many of these offer a complex analysis of the state of society but offer little in the way of practical theology to address the outcomes. This short book is quite the opposite. It deals concisely with the reality of being a Christian today – and does not pull any punches.
Three words come to mind in trying to give a flavour. It is gripping, challenging and straightforward.
It is gripping because the author offers examples from his own faith journey and the stories of those he has encountered on the way. Many of his encounters introduce people on the fringes (or beyond) of the traditional churches. He tells of how he has learned from these encounters and how they have enabled him to re-assess his own beliefs and consequently walk faithfully alongside those who might otherwise have walked away.
It is challenging in that he does not suggest that being a Christian today is an easy business. He debunks much of the blind acceptance which blights middle of the road Christianity and will not accept bland statements of complex doctrines that have not been examined beyond the Sunday School class.
It is straightforward in that he takes seriously generations of scholarship, opens it up to the ‘average’ reader and offers a realistic assessment of its value. Where he criticises he does not leave a vacuum but offers an intriguing range of possibilities.
Read this book if you are serious about understanding the world in which we live and Christian teaching from the existence of God, the place of the cross, to whether the resurrection actually happened.
A deceptively simple book that will change the way you think. Recommended
