Music for the Second Service Lectionary Compiled by Ann Harrison, John Henderson, Peter Moger & David Ogden for the Royal School of Church Music SCM Canterbury Press, £25.00 ISBN 978-1-85311-840-0
This publication by four eminent church musicians is a valuable resource for those who have responsibility for music in church services. The book covers the Sundays of Lectionary years A, B & C, the Holy Days and major feasts. The unique feature is that not only does it suggest suitable hymns (including those suitable for children) for the lectionary, but anthems, organ music, and musical settings for Psalms.
The hymns suggested cover every style from Wesley (& Watts) to Taize, Chilcott to Wildgoose, the organ music from Bach to Lloyd Webber and the anthems from Tallis to Rutter.
The contents of the book draws on a prodigious variety of sources – which are catalogued against each hymn (or anthem) – this is extremely helpful. The coding of the suggested hymn (it does not suggest the hymn tunes) indicates those hymns shown for the lectionary reading or the ecclesiastical calendar, which are suitable for opening/closing/ Communion/morning or evening services.
Although predominantly aimed at the Anglican Church, it does draw heavily on the hymnals which are used in many Methodist Churches.
Once the coding scheme is mastered this innovative and comprehensive book will be a valuable resource for those leading worship and musicians to enhance congregational worship. At £25.00, the book is not cheap, but it will save a great deal of time.
