To many preachers, Isaiah is a closed book but Rev Michael Thompson offers us an opportunity for it to open in front of our eyes. This book offers an in depth study of Isaiah, yet in straightforward, accessible language with helpful illustrations. The introduction in the Prelude, gives the reader a clear outline of the principles behind the book and how the various parts came to be written and brought together. Then the book is divided into two main parts, separated by an Intermezzo and followed by a Postlude.
The first section describes its spread, both in range of thought and varied literary expression. It traces the heart of spirituality as it is demonstrated throughout the text. It gives insights and interpretations which will be invaluable to preachers in preparation for worship or house fellowship groups. The Postlude offers a sermon, based on Isaiah 61 v 1 – 3 and Luke 4, 16 – 30. The book comes recommended as a highly academic work, well researched and couched in accessible language, which would be a valuable addition to any preacher's bookshelves. However, it should not be left on the shelf for too long as there is much to be learned from its pages!
