’Westerley’ is situated on the Esplanade and residents can look out of the front of the Home, over the road and a further garden belonging to the home, across the estuary to Morecambe Bay. There is a small shopping area close to the Home which caters for most needs; these and the local Methodist Church are within an easy five minute walk.
‘Westerley’ was formerly a hotel until purchased by Mutual Aid Homes and opened on 17th March 1951 as a Residential Care Home for elderly people. The property next door, Elmhurst, was purchased by Mutual Aid Homes in the early 1970s and, after extensive alterations including a link between the two buildings, was opened on 6th May 1972.
Facilities:
The Home is registered with the Commission for Social Care Inspection to accommodate 29 residents, including up to four with special needs arising from mental infirmity. There are 26 rooms available for occupation by residents, all of which have en-suite facilities. Residents are usually accommodated in single rooms but eight of the rooms are large enough for a married couple to occupy jointly if required. Residents’ bedrooms are situated on the ground and two upper floors which are served by a passenger lift. Rooms in the former Elmhurst property on each floor are accessed either by a few steps, or by stair lifts, which can be operated with staff supervision. Several rooms have splendid views over Morecambe Bay and surrounding hills. All rooms are fitted with a call bell to enable residents to summon a member of staff should the need arise and most rooms are equipped to recognised standards for disabled residents. On the ground floor there is a large dining room and day lounge, both of which overlook Morecambe Bay. A second lounge on the ground floor is used as a TV lounge and library. Daily prayers and occasional entertainments are held in the dining room, which is equipped with a loop system for the hard of hearing. The Home has extensive lawns laid at the front and a prize-winning garden, greatly appreciated by the residents and visitors to the Home and the town. A ramp has been installed to both entrances to the Home to ease access for the disabled. There is adequate car parking in the grounds and across the road. Secure accommodation for scooters, with battery recharging facilities, has recently been installed.
